12Fall2013AsassistanttothedeanBalthaserwasanon-departmentalrepresentativeonthecommitteeNowtheprocessisalotlikemakingsausageitsnottooprettyasyoumakeitbuteventuallyyouhavesomethinggood.Andwhilenotallprogramsparticipatedenoughpeoplewereatthetablethateveryonefeltthattheywererepresented.Ithinkthesinglevoicewasveryimportant.Theartsandsciencespeoplewerealwaysengagedincampusgovernancestructureandwhatwasgoingon.TheyhadinteractionswithsuchawidesectionofthecampusconstituencythatthereweresomanythingsthatwerealikeaboutthetwoofthemaccordingtoBalthaser.Thesinglevoicewasntnecessarilybetterbutitwasbiggerandabletakeadvantageacrossdisciplines.AnotherissuewasandstillisthesizeofthepieintermsoftheallocationsthatIPFWgetsfromthestatewhyareourstudentsnearthebottomofthestackWerenotsayingothercampusesneedtogiveuspartoftheirpiesaidBalthaserWeresayingthepiejustneedstobebigger.Backwhenweestablishedthesingleschoolbycombiningthestrengthsofthedepartmentstheresultwaspositive.InthedeansofficeitselfitmeantsomerestructuringintheadministrationbutthemainchangewasanewdeanwhobydesignwassomeonefromoutsideofIPFW.Partoftheimpetusforthecombinationinthe1980sthatledtotheestablishmentoftheSchoolofArtsandScienceswasageneraldissatisfactiononthepartoftheIPFWdepartmentswiththeoversightfromthehomecampuses.AtthetimebothIUandPurduedeanswereactingdeanssoitwasagoodtimetoconsiderconsolidationofthetwoschoolsintoone.Howeverbecausebothschoolshaddifferentworldviewsaswellitwaslikeblendingafamily.BarbBlauvelthasbeenthesecretaryforthehistoryandpoliticalsciencedepartmentssince1970.Shewatchedthegrowthandchangesfromthatperspective.ThemergerofthetwoschoolsIthinksetthefoundationforbasicrestructuringofacademicunitsthathappenedallacrosscampus.WiththemergerofthetwoschoolscamethedevelopmentofCOAScorerequirementsandIthinkthosesamebasicrequirementshelpedtodefinethegeneraleducationrequirementsseveralyearslater.Friedelagrees.ThecreationoftheSchoolofArtsandSciencesprovidedmanyopportunitiesformetohavedirectinteractionwithcolleaguesfromtheotherdisciplines.Thespecificchangesthatoccurredinthedeansofficereducedduplicationofeffortandtheneedtolearnmultiplesetsofproceduresandpolicies.AtthecampuslevelandthroughitsdeantheSchoolofArtsandScienceshadacombinedvoiceabroaderperspectiveandcurricularcohesion.MuchoftheCOASandrelatedamalgamationsacrosscampuswerespearheadedbyCOASfaculty.BlauveltnamedJuliusSmulkstysDavidCoxVanCoufoudakisMichaelDownsSteveHollanderandBalthaserasplayingsignificantrolesinthedevelopmentofCOAS.SmulkstysCoxandCoufoudakiswereverygooddeanswhorepresentedArtsandScienceswelltothecampuscommunityandtheAcademicOfficersCommittee.AlsoLindaBalthaserwasoneofthemostimportantpeopleintheCOASoffice.SheworkedtirelesslyandwasamodelofefficiencyandintellectBlauveltshared.MikeDownschairofthepoliticalsciencedepartmentwasoftenconsultedbythedeansaboutpoliciesandproblemsthatcameupinartsandsciences.HealongwithSteveHollanderEnglishandlinguisticshelpedtodeveloptheIPFWfacultygovernancestructureuponwhichtheCOASgovernancestructurewasmodeled.AmorerecentchangeisthechangefromSchooltoCollegeofArtsandSciences.WhilecolloquiallyschoolcollegeanduniversityareoftenusedinterchangeablyaccordingtoCOASDeanCarlDrummondItisimportanttorecognizethattheyhavemorespecificandlimitedmeaningswithintheorganizationalstructureofAmericanLindaBalthaserCOASBarbBlauvelthistory 13highereducation.Aschoolisanacademicunitdedicatedtoaparticularfieldofstudymostoftenatechnicalorprofessionaldomainofknowledge.Acollegeisanacademicunitcomposedofawiderrangeofacademicdisciplines.Assuchthetermcollegeismuchmoreappropriatethanthemorerestrictivetermschoolforthe15departmentsandmanyprogramsthatspanthehumanitiessciencesandsocialsciences.WhataresomeofthemostpositivechangesoncampusovertheyearsForFreidelthereweremany.WhenIfirstcameherewewereTheExtensionorByPassHighandIthinkthatwevecomealongway.AndIthinkalotofithastodowithathleticstheworkofIPFWsadministrationandincreasedparticipationofcommunitymembers.Soawholelotofthingscametogetherincludinggettingourlegislatorstothinkofusfirstinsteadofjustthinkingofthemaincampuses.ImeanWestLafayetteandBloomingtonarestrangeplacestohavemajoruniversitiesbecausetheyarenotpopulationcenters.Soalotofthingshavecometogether.IbelievethemostimportantchangeinCOASisnothistoricalbutratherongoingsharedDeanDrummond.Thisinvolvesbothchangesinourself-perceptionaswellasarealtransitioninourcoremissionfromoneofprovidinggeneraleducationcoursestoredirectingourattentionenergyandenthusiasmtothestudentsmajoringinouracademicprograms.TheoutcomeofthisongoingtransitioncanbeseeninthesignificantgrowthinthenumberofstudentsgraduatingfromourcollegeoverthelastseveralyearsandIhaveeveryconfidencethattrendwillcontinueintothefuture.HowhavethesechangesaffectedCOASstudentsEveryoneinterviewednotedthatnowstudentsthinkofthemselvesasIPFWstudentsmoresothanIUorPurdue.Theyalsonotedthatmanyofourstudentsarestillfromlesstraditionalbackgroundswhichmakesthenumberwhoareabletodoexceptionalworkundertryingcircumstancesmuchmoreimpressive.ThatsaidevenduringBalthaserstenurestudentsweresurprisedbytheacademicrigorexpectedofthem.ForFriedelthestudentsaregreattheonlythingthatisfrighteningisthatsomeofmyformerstudentshavealreadyretiredFriedelbelievesthatalongwithacademicsathleticsandstudenthousinghelpedexpandIPFWstudentsworldviewbypullinginstudentsfromwidernationalandinternationalareas.StudentathletesandothershavecometoIPFWfromSpainNorwayBrazilKenyaandmore.IwanttheverybestforallofmystudentsbutIalsowantthemtobeopentonewideasheexplained.Andthemorestudentsfromthisregioncaninteractwiththeseinternationalyoungmenandwomenthebetter.Studenthousingalsohasaffectedthetypesofstudentswehave.HavingplacesoncampusgivesparentspeaceofmindandgivesstudentsfromoverseasoroutsideofFortWayneaplacetoliveoncampus.TocelebratetheColleges25thanniversarytheCOASExecutiveCommitteeestablishedanawardinrecognitionofoutstandingcontributionsofscholarshipteachingandservicetotheliberalartsandsciences.TheawardsfirstrecipientisitsnamesaketheLowellW.BeinekeAwardforOutstandingContributionstotheLiberalArtsandSciences.BeinekesoutstandingcontributionsintheclassroominservicetotheuniversityandinthefieldofmathematicalgraphtheoryestablishhimasanexemplarofprofessionalismsaidDeanDrummondBynamingtheawardafterhimwenotonlywillalwaysremindourselvesofhislonganddistinguishedcareeratIPFWbutalsoholduphisaccomplishmentstofuturegenerationsofIPFWfaculty.FriedelsconnectionswithBeinekestartedtheyearhecametoIPFW.InthosedayseverythingwasinKettlerHallsotheyallkneweachotherandhadmanyopportunitiestointeract.WhenFriedelwenthomeforChristmashisfirstyearrelativesfromEnglandwhocameoverforBeinekesweddingstayedinhisapartment.Andthetwoprofessorsalsosharebirthdayweekssotheyoftenhavecelebratedtheirbirthdaystogether.BalthaserpraisedBeinekeinthathisapproachisoneofgenuineinterestinthestudentslearningandheiscertainlynotoneof 14Fall2013theImreadingthistoyoufrommynotesprofessors.Hesaveryengagingpersonandthestudentsappreciatehimandhiscommitment.Manystudent-athleteshavebeenmathmajorsthereasonfortheconnectionsisnotentirelyclear.HoweverLowellandhiswifeoftenattendedthegamesofhisstudent-athletestosupportthem.Healsoregularlyopenedtheirhometostudents.BeinekegrewupnearDecaturInd.sohislocalrootsrundeep.Hisconnectiontohisformerstudentsisequallydeep.InfacthewasrecentlyinvitedbyaformergraduatestudenttobeakeynotespeakerataconferenceinIndiasoheandhiswifewentoverforthisopportunity.Beinekealsoeditedanumberofprofessionaljournals.Heisrespectedasanacademicinhisfieldofspecializationbutalsobyhisstudentsforhiscommitmenttotheirsuccessinhisclassesatalllevels.ThoseinterviewedforthispiecesharedhowBeinekeexemplifiesthebestoftheliberalarts.Theliberalartsandsciencesareincreasinglyfundamentaltotheoveralllearningexperienceintermsoftheircontributiontothedistinctionbetweentrainingandeducation.ToBalthasertheliberalartsrepresentthebroadgeneralfoundationthatisnecessarytobeagoodcitizen.ManytimesfromemployerssheheardIcanteachsomeonehowtodothisjob.Buttheyneedtobringtometheabilitytothinkreadwriteandthesefundamentalabilitiesarepartofabroadliberalartseducation.Nationallyhighereducationisexperiencingawiderangeofstructuralstressesandisundergoingavarietyofsystemicchanges.InDeanDrummondsopinionsomeofthesechangeshavethepotentialtocreatenegativeimpactsonacademicfreedom.WhileIdoseeasocietaldevaluationoftheprofessorateandanumberoftrendsthatareworkingtounderminetheprofessionalismofhighereducationIdonotseeawidespreadattackonthecorevaluesofacademicfreedom.Iammoreconcernedhoweverthattheconceptofacademicfreedomwillbemadeincreasinglyirrelevantbytheongoingtrendofcommoditizationofhighereducation.TheresultsofarecentlycompletedsurveyofemployersconductedbytheAssociationofAmericanCollegesandUniversitieshttpbit.ly16VM2BPclearlyindicatesthevalueemployersplaceontheabilityofcollegegraduatestothinkcriticallycommunicateclearlyandsolvecomplexproblems.Theseareallskillsandabilitiesthatarehonedthroughtheacquisitionofaliberaleducation.AdditionallytheeverincreasinginterconnectivityofU.S.societywithinaglobaleconomicandpoliticalframeworkmakestheattainmentofahighlevelofculturalliteracyofprimaryimportance.Whatwillthenext25yearsholdforcurrentandfutureCOASstafffacultyandstudentsBlauveltissureofonethingIdontreallyhaveanyadviceotherthantoenjoyyourjob.IhavethoroughlyenjoyedworkingatIPFWandfeelveryfortunatetohavespentmanymanyyearshere.Friedelwhoistechnicallyretiredcontinuestoworkeachfallterm.HesaysitisthestudentswhokeephimhereespeciallythefirstgenerationcollegestudentsWhenIgraduatedfromhighschoolIwasnottheoutstandingsciencestudentIwastheoutstandingforeignlanguagesstudent.Myfatherhada4thgradeeducationandmymotherdidnotfinishhighschoolbutIwentonformyPh.D.soIcanrelatetomanyofourfirst-genstudents.AndhecontinuestoworkwiththemincludingsomewhonowareCOASfacultylikeJohnLaMastermathandAndrewDownspoliticalscience.TheroadtoCOASwasnotwithoutafewsharpturnsandpotholes.HoweverasBeinekeexplainedtheprocesswherebyseparateIUandPurdueunitsbecameIPFWwasavitalstepintheprogressiontomaturityasaninstitutionofhigherlearninginIPFWsownright.IthinkthatitadvancedtheperceptioninthecommunityespeciallyamongtheleadersofthecommunitythatIPFWwasavitalforcenotjustintheareasofbusinessandengineeringbutinthefullspectrumoftheartsandsciences.LuckilyforouralumnipastandpresentCOAScontinuestostriveforexcellenceacrossthespectrumcoveredbytheliberalarts.tIbelievethemostimportantchangeinCOASisnothistoricalbutratherongoingsharedDeanDrummond.Thisinvolvesbothchangesinourself-perceptionaswellasarealtransitioninourcoremissionfromoneofprovidinggeneraleducationcoursestoredirectingourattentionenergyandenthusiasmtothestudentsmajoringinouracademicprograms. 15InterviewwithLowellW.BeinekeIn1965LowellW.BeinekebecameanassistantprofessoratPurdueUniversityatFortWaynepartofthefutureIPFWbuthisconnectionstoIPFWactuallybeganin1964whenhetaughtasummercourseforIndianaUniversityinFortWayne.SomeofmyreasonsforchoosingtocometoPurdueUniversityatFortWayneweremystrongfeelingsfortheeducationthatIhadreceivedatPurdueandthattheFortWaynecampuswasinitsinfancyandhencewasaplacewhereIfeltIcouldmakeadifference.Beinekescareerisaseriesoffirsts.Hechosetospecializeinwhatwasthenanewareaofmathematicsgraphtheory.HebecamethefirstendowedchairatIPFWwhenin1986hebecametheSchreyProfessorofMathematics.HewasthefirstfacultymembernotfromtheWestLafayettecampustohavehisnameincludedinPurduesBookofGreatTeachersadisplayinPurduesMemorialUnion.AndhewasthefirstrecipientofanawardthatishisnamesakeTheLowellW.BeinekeAwardforOutstandingContributionstotheLiberalArtsandSciences.Asifthiswasnotenoughanendowedmathscholarshipalsobearshisname.SowhoisLowellBeinekeWeaskedhimafewquestionstohelpyougettoknowmoreabouthim.FirstwhatisyourareaofexpertiseIworkingraphtheorybutnetworktheorywouldprobablybeabettername.Thebasicstructurethatwestudycanbethoughtofasacollectionoflocationssuchascitieswithsomepairsofthemconnectedbylinkssuchasdirectflights.Otherexamplesofthingsthatarerepresentedbythesegraphsareelectricnetworksandfamilytrees.SpeakingoftreesthemathproblemfeaturedinthemovieGoodWillHuntingwasaproblemontreesthatmythesisadvisorhadsolved.Graphtheoryemergedinthe1950sasanareaofmathematicsinitsownright.Sincethenithasexplodedinimportanceduelargelytoitsintimateconnectionswithcomputerscience.ForinstancearguablythemostimportantopenprobleminthefieldisTheTravelingPicturedabovelefttorightPeterDragnevChairmathematicsLowellW.BeinekefirstrecipientoftheLowellW.BeinekeAwardforOutstandingContributionstotheLiberalArtsandSciencesandCarlDrummondDeanCollegeofArtsandSciences. 16Fall2013SalesmanProblemwhichhasimportantramificationsforcomputerscience.Inessenceitaskswhetherthereisanefficientmethodforcomputingthecheapestwaytoflytoaverylargenumberofcities.HowdidyoulandinthisnewfieldItwasfortuitousthatduringmyfirstsemesteratUniversityofMichiganIhappenedtotakeacourseonthefoundationsofhighermathematicsthatwasbeingtaughtbyFrankHararyapioneeringraphtheory.OnethingledtoanotherandheinvitedmetobehisresearchassistantatUniversityCollegeLondonwherehewasspendingasabbaticalyear.Mydecisiontoaccepthisoffersetmeonthecoursethatmylifehassincetaken.CanyousaymoreaboutthatDuringthatyearinLondonIdidmuchoftheresearchformydoctoraldissertation.IstillhadtotakesomecoursesandpassqualifyingexamssoIreturnedtoMichiganfortwoyears.ThenduringmyfirstyearinFortWayneHararyinvitedmetospendanotheryearinLondon.FortunatelyIwasgrantedaleaveofabsenceandforthesecondtimeayearinLondonchangedmylife.ThistimethechangewasmorepersonalsincethatwaswhenImetmywifeJudith.IsshealsoamathematicianNoshewasasocialworkeractuallyaprobationofficerwhenwemet.HoweverIliketosaythatifnotaproducerofmathematicssheisaproducerofmathematicianssincebothofourchildrenweremathmajorsincollege.OurdaughterisnowamathprofessorinMassachusettsandoursonastatisticianinCalifornia.ArethereotherpeopleyouwouldsingleoutasespeciallyimportanttoyourcareerOneistheBritishmathematicianRobinWilsonheandIhavecollaboratedonanumberofbooksovertheyears.Wilsonishimselfaprolificauthorbutourjointworkhasbeenprimarilyeditingbooks.OurcurrentprojectisthefourthandfinalbookinaseriespublishedbyCambridgeUniversityPressontopicsindifferentareasofgraphtheory.Theideaofbeingateacherwasplantedoratleastnourishedbythepersonwhotaughtmethroughfifthgrade.Thiswasinasmallone-teacherschoolwithjustoneclassroomforgrades1to6.Hetoldmethatwhilepeoplecannothavecareersinalltheirareasofinterestteacherscanenableotherstohavesuccessfulcareersinmanyfields.AfterthatitwasmyhighschoolEnglishteacherwhopointedmetoPurdueanditwasduringmyfirstyeartherethatIbecameconvincedthatIwantedtogotograduateschoolinmathsolidifyinganideathathadbeeninmythoughts.Itsoundsasthoughyouhavebeenabletoworkwithmathematiciansfromaroundtheworld.HaveyoumadestrongconnectionselsewhereInJanuary2013IhadthehonorofbeingthekeynotespeakerataninternationalconferenceheldatSt.XaviersCatholicCollegeofEngineeringinthesouthernIndianstateofTamilNaduanditwasawonderfulexperienceoneofthemostrewardingofmylifeIhavebeenextremelyfortunateinbeingabletoacceptinvitationstoawidevarietyofcountries.InadditiontoIndiaandEnglandofcourseIthinkthatthemostmemorableexperienceswereinSouthAfricaZimbabweEgyptandThailand.DoyoufinditdifficulttobalanceteachingandresearchThatisaperennialproblemforuniversityfaculty.Thereisatensionbetweenthetwoareasofendeavorbuttheyalsoreinforceoneanother.Ithinkandhopethatitisnotjustwishfulthinkingthatmyresearchcontributestomycontinuingexcitementaboutmathematicsandthatthisexcitementshowsintheclassroom.TeachingandresearchhavealsocometogetherinmyservingasthesupervisoroffourPh.D.theseseventhoughwedonthavedoctoralprogramsatIPFW.ThreeofthesedegreesweregrantedbyPurduethefourthbyWesternMichiganUniversity.Activitiessuchasthisshowthesupportthatdepartmentchairsanddeanshaveprovided 17hereatIPFWmuchofmygoodfortunehasbeenthroughtheencouragementthatthesepeoplehaveprovided.ComingbacktoIPFWandtheCOASinparticularhaveyouseenmuchchangeintheemphasisonresearchovertheyearsMyperceptionisthatscholarlyendeavorhasalwaysbeenencouragedatleastinthesciencesbutIbelievealsoinotherfieldsespeciallythehumanities.Intheearlydaysteachingloadsweregenerallyhigherthantheyarenowandmostpromotionshadexcellenceinteachingastheprimarybasisorbothteachingandresearchnowexcellenceinresearchismostcommon.ThatIthinkisrepresentativeoftheevolutionofIPFWintoamatureuniversity.ThereisalotofgreatresearchgoingonintheCollege.ServiceisofcourseathirdareaofuniversityactivitywhathaveyoudonethatyoumostenjoyedWhatistraditionallycalledservicehastwocomponentsinternaltotheuniversityandexternal.AlthoughIveservedonavarietyofcommitteestheareathatIthinkthatItakethemostsatisfactioninisworkingwithstudents.Ivebeenoneoftheadvisorsofourmathclubformostofmyyearshereandhavealsoplayedaroleingettingnationalhonorsocietiesoncampus.BythewayourmathclubiscalledPIbothfortheinitialsofourtwouniversitiesaswellasthetranscendentalnumber.TwoofthehonorsocietiesthatwenowhaveherearePiMuEpsilonforoutstandingmathmajorsandmostrecentlyPhiEtaSigmaforstudentswhoearnoutstandinggradesintheirfirstyear.DoyouhaveanyobservationsaboutlifeasauniversityprofessorReflectingbackIthinkthatmychildhoodgrowinguponafarmgavemethemodelthatIveadopted.Justasthefarmwasawayoflifeformanyofmyancestorssotheuniversityisawayoflifeforme.Itsnotjustajobitsanever-presentpartofmylifejustasonafarmtheresalwaysmoreworktobedone.Furthermoreteachinglikefarminghastherhythmoftheseasonsonlywecallthemsemesters.AndlastbutcertainlynotleastwhataboutyourformerstudentsIllstartwithoneonthelightersideJulieBuchheitatheatremajorwhoasJuliaBarrhadaroleontheTVshowAllMyChildrenformanyyears.ShetoldmeoncethatIwasherfavoritemathteacherbutsincemathwasntoneofherstrengthsImnotsurehowsignificantthatis.InansweringaquestionsuchasthisIguessthatIthinkfirstofthosemathmajorswhohavegoneontoexcelinpost-baccalaureateeducationnotjustuniversityprofessorsandactuarialpracticebutinotherprofessionsincludingbusinesslawandmedicine.OnestudentAlexJameswentontoearnalawdegreeatNotreDameafterwhichhewasemployedintheofficeoftheIndianaAttorneyGeneralseepage14inthe2010issueofCollegiuminwhichJameswasprofiled.HesnowworkingonadoctorateincomputerscienceatIndianaUniversity.BythewayheresaquotationfromJamesthatIlikeHavingarguedacaseincourtinthemorningandtaughtacalculusclassatnightthetwoactivitiesaresurprisinglysimilarinhavingtomakeformalargumentstosupportaconclusion.ThegroupwhereIliketothinkIvehadapositiveimpactarethemathteachersinourschoolspassingmathontofuturegenerations.OneofourcurrentseniorswastaughtbyanIPFWmathgraduatewhowastaughtbyanIPFWmathgraduate.Oneofthesidebenefitsofteachingatacampuslikeoursisthatweseemanyofouralumnilaterinlifeandinparticularthoseintheteachingprofession.t 18Fall2013EricTippmanFortWaynesresidentsoftennoteitsso-calledboomerangeffecthowasignificantnumberofpeopleleaveforawhileandthenreturn.ChemistryAssistantProfessorEricTippmana1998graduateofCOASsDepartmentofChemistryisacaseinpoint.IstartedasanengineerTippmanexplainedthenafteraboutayearandahalfIrealizedthatengineeringwasntforme.SoIsteppedbackandtookmyinterestinphysiologyandsetanextremelyhighgoaltobecomeasurgeon.WhilepursuingthatmajorTippmantookorganicchemistryatPurdueinWestLafayettewithMerritAndrewsandachemistrymajorwasborn.ButwhywasthisIPFWstudentatPurdueCurrentchemistrydepartmentChairRonFriedmanencouragedTippmantoattendPurdueforafewterms.Iwantedatotalimmersionineducation.SoIsavedupbyworkingtwojobsinthesummerandspent18monthsatPurdue.HowdidthetwoschoolscompareAcademicallytheywerethesame.ForTippmanthedifferencewastheintangiblesoflivingonhisownandbeingfarawayfromhome.WhileanundergraduateTippmanworkedonresearchprojectswithmanyfacultyFriedmanMichaelColumbiaVinceMaloneyandDonaldLinnatIPFWandDavidThompsonatPurdue.IknewIwantedtogotograduateschoolwhichmeantthatIneededtospecialize.IdidntknowwhatspecializationIwantedwithinthefieldsoIdabbledinallofthem.IstillthinkitsamazingthatIPFWletmedoallofthatandpreparedmesowellforgradschool.AlthoughfirmlyensconcedinchemistryTippmanalsohadmentorsoutsideofhisdepartment.AccordingtoTippmanPeterHamburgermathhadthiswayofelevatingyousothatyoufeltthatyouwerentjustanaveragestudentataregionalcampus.AnotherIPFWmentoringconnectionwasthroughhisfriendandsoccerteammateDanThuente.DansmotherMaryHelenwasprofessorandchairofEnglishandlinguisticsatIPFWandfromherIdgetalltheseamazingbooksthatjustopenedmyworld.DansfatherDavewasacomputerscienceandmathprofessor.HedtakeDantoIPFWforeventsanddowntoPurduetothingsliketheaeronauticalresearchdaysandIwouldgettogowiththemtoseetheseamazingthings.SoTippmanbenefittedfrombeingoncampusbeforehewasevenanIPFWstudent.TheThuentesinfluencewastoreinforcetheimportanceofthepursuitofknowledgewhichopeneduptheworldtoshowthereismore.Tippmanisafirstgenerationcollegestudentsocollegewasaforeignworldtohisfamilymembers.AfterhereceivedaB.S.fromIPFWTippmanwenttoOhioStateUniversityOSUforhisgraduateworkinphysicalorganicchemistry.Wewereinvestigatingsomethingcalledreactiveintermediatesusinglasers.WhyIntellectualcuriositybutalsowhenyoutakeAandputitinyourbodyanditmakesBoftenwedontknowhowthetransformationhappens.Sohisresearchstudiedthestepsbetweentoparseoutwhathappenswhenhowandwhy.RealworldapplicationsThisallowsresearcherstolabelproteinswithinthebody.Ifyoumixoneofthecompoundsthatwedevelopedwiththeproteinitlabelsitpermanentlyandletsyoufollowthatproteinthroughthebody.AfterOSUTippmanbeganapost-doctoralappointmentattheprestigiousScrippsInstituteinSanDiegoinmolecularbiologyandbiochemistry.HereTippmanwasabletocombinehisinterestsinphysicalorganicchemistryandmolecularbiologyeventuallyfindingaresearchnicheinthesomewhatnewandgrowingfieldofchemicalbiology.WhileinSanDiegoTippmanwasheadhuntedforapositionatCardiffUniversityinWales.BecausehehadbrokenhislegplayingsoccerheknewhewouldbeunabletoruntheinterviewExpandingResearchFrontiersByCathleenM.Carosella 19circuitthatyear.HehadachoicebetweenanotheryearinSanDiegowaitingforthenextinterviewcycleandthenewpositionatCardiff.Afterlistingtheprosandconsofthemovewithhisfamilytheydecidedtogoforit.TippmanandhisfamilylivedinCardiffforsixyears.DidheenjoyitYesitwaslikebeingonholidayforsixyears.AtCardiffhetaughtbothundergraduateandgraduatestudents.HowdoU.K.studentscomparetoU.S.studentsThebiggestdifferenceisthattheU.K.doesnothaveageneraleducationtraditionatthecollegelevelstudentsfocustheirstudiesontheirintendedmajors.AtCardiffIonlyevertaughtchemistrymajors.AtIPFWIdealwithengineersandanyonetakingchemistryfortheirgeneraleducationcredits.Manyoftheotherdifferencesareactuallyculturalnotacademicoreducationaldifferences.ButwhatbroughtTippmanandhisfamilybacktoFortWayneIhadworkedSaturdaysforbasically10yearsatleasthalfoftheday.Ihadachievedmuchpapersingoodjournalslargegrantsandbigresearchgroups.Icamehomeandsawmyneighborwithhissix-year-oldridingabikearoundtheneighborhood.Mydaughterdidnothaveabikeanddidnotknowhowtorideone.IboughtherabikeandprettymuchfromthatdayforwardIsearchedforawaytoreestablishaworklifebalance.ThisdesireledhimtotheopeningheeventuallyfilledatIPFW.HowhasIPFWchangedsinceyouleftIwasactuallythefirstclassthatmovedovertotheScienceBuildingwhichwasahugeadvanceforthesciencesatIPFW.ButtoseewhattheyvedonewithWalbandalloftheotherbuildingsoncampussincethenisverynice.AreIPFWstudentsdifferentnowWhenIseeandtalktomystudentsitislikeseeingmyself10or15yearsago.Samestrugglessameissuespreventingthemfromsucceedingandtheyarereallyjustthesame.Itislikelookinginthemirror.DoesitsurprisestudentsthatyouareanIPFWalumnusIdontthinkthatitnecessarilysurprisesthembutitbreaksdownbarriers.ItellthemmyshortbiographyIwenttoschoolhereItookthiscoursethatyouareinthisiswhatIdidafterwardsandthenIcameback.Tippmanthinkshisbackgroundgiveshimempathywiththeirsituationsandheisbetterabletohelpwhentheyarestruggling.HecansayThisiswhatIdidwhenIwaspresentedwithasimilarsituationandmaybethatresonatesmorewiththem.Tippmanworksonwhatiscalledgeneticallyencodingnon-naturalaminoacids.Everybeingonthisplanetusesthesame20aminoacidstobuildthedifferentproteinsusedbylivingentities.AndTippmansworkissignificantbecauseifyoucanincreasethenumberofaminoacidbuildingblocksyoucanbuildawiderrangeofnewproteins.TippmanscurrentresearchcombineswhathewasdoingasaPh.D.studentwithwhathelearnedaboutmolecularbiologyatScripps.Ijustsawaconnectiontherethatnooneelsehadseenbecausenooneelsehadhadmyuniqueacademicexperience.AndIjustcombinedthemandthisisresearchwearepublishingrightnow.Whatweareworkingonistoturntheproteinonandoffusinglighttocontrolwhentostartandwhentostop.Andthatiscombiningthenon-naturalaminoacidthechemistryofwhichisbasedonresearchhedidatOSUsoyoumakeanaminoacidwithitthencombinethatwithsomemolecularbiologyforgeneticallyencodingit.Thiscanbeattachedtoproteinstomakeiteasierforresearcherstotrackandstudythem.AnarticleaboutthisresearchwasacceptedinMarch2013forpublicationinAngewandteChemietheGermanversionoftheAmericanChemicalSociety.SowhatsnextTippmansnextresearchprojectistoknowhowtheenzymesusedtorecognizethenon-naturalaminoacidsattach.Todothisheneedstocrystallizetheenzymesandcatchthemintheactofholdingontothenon-naturalaminoacids.Findingoneoftheseproteinscanbeafishingexpeditionbutonceyoucangetasnapshotofaproteinintheactofhangingonyoucanrationallydesigntheproteinsothatyoudonthavetogoonthesefishingexpeditions.Alsoifyouknowmoreaboutthemolecularnatureofhowaproteininteractswithaspecificaminoacidyoucansculptthatproteinforanotheraminoacid.InterestinglyTippmansspecializationalsoallowshimtodofreelanceworkforlocallegalprofessionalswhoneedinformationonthechemicalnatureofillicitdrugsanddrug-likecompounds.Withnewman-madedrugssuchasSpiceincreasingtheneedfornewlegislationspecialistslikeTippmanhelplawyersandlegislators.Tocovernewdrugstheyhavewrittenlawsinsuchageneralwaythattheyhaveoutlawedentireclassesorstructuresofsubstanceswhichmeanscommonsubstancesthatpeopleneedtolivewouldbeoutlawed.Tippmanenjoysthisfreelanceworkbecauseitisreallyfascinatingtoseehowscienceinteractswithothersystemslikethelaworsocietyingeneral. 20Fall2013WhatdoesthisprofessorwhoreturnedtoFortWaynedoinhissparetimeLastyearhecameinthirdattheFort4Fitnessrunandheplanstowinitthisyear.Heplaystennisandsoccerregularly.AlsobecausehefindsSudokuorcrosswordsboringtokeephismindelasticandalertTippmanislearningpianoandbasssomethinghefindsmuchmoreinterestingthandoingpuzzles.OncampusTippmanbegansettinguphislabrecentlyandthefirststudentsstartedworkinginthelabinspring2013.BesidesteachingintheclassroomheiscommittedtogivingstudentsrealactiveresearchexperienceslikehereceivedwhenhewasatIPFW.NowitishisturntomotivatethenextgenerationofIPFWgraduatesincludingthosewhomightboomerangbacktocampus.JodiRossInpsychologypeoplewillsometimesassumethatyoumusthavepersonalexperiencewiththetopicyoustudyandthatpersonalexperiencedrivesyoutowanttostudythattopic.InJodyRossscasethatisnottruebutthatdoesnotlessenherpassionforwhatshestudies.AsafreshmanatIndianaUniversityBloomingtonsheremembersbeingtoldtopickamajorthatinvolvedsomethingsheenjoyedbutalsothatstudentsoftenchangetheirmajors.Iwasinterestedinbiologygeneticsinparticularteachingandpsychologicaldisorders.IdeclaredamajorinpsychologythinkingthatIverywellmaychangethislater.Whatshefoundasapsychologymajorwasafieldinwhichshecouldintegrateherinterestsinscienceteachingandmentalhealth.Graduateschoolwasagivenbutsheassumedthatshewouldbecomeapracticingpsychologistspendingmostofhertimeprovidingmentalhealthservicestoclients.VariouspsychologyclassesatIUcementedRossschoiceofmajorsoshedidnotchangeitlikeshethoughtshewould.Anabnormalpsychologyclassreinforcedherinterestinclinicalpsychologythesubfieldofpsychologythatdealswiththeassessmentandtreatmentofpsychologicaldisorders.Buthands-onundergraduateresearchassistantshipswereprobablythemostformativecoursesItook.TheseexperiencessimilartotheIPFWpsychologydepartmentsPSY496000researchassistantshipclasseshelpedRossappreciatethescientificnatureofpsychologyandtounderstandhowwestudypsychologicaldisordersempirically.WhenRossappliedtograduateschoolshelookedforprogramsinwhatisknownasthescientist-practitionermodelofpsychology.Theseprogramstrainstudentstoconductresearchrelatedtomentalhealthissuesandtoapplyresearchfindingstotheirownclinicalpracticeofpsychotherapy.IwassurprisedtofindhowmuchIenjoyedresearchandtowardtheendofgraduateschoolIbegantolookforacademicpositionsthatwouldallowmetocontinuemyresearchcareer.AttheUniversityofHoustonRosssPh.D.focuswaschildandfamilyclinicalpsychology.ShewasinterestedinrelationshipandmaritaltherapyandstartedhergraduateresearchworkinginalabinHoustonwithoneofthetopcouplesviolenceresearchers.HerworkinthisareacontinuesinherresearchatIPFWintointimatepartnerviolence.BeforecomingtoIPFWRossinternedatacommunitymentalhealthcenterinClevelandOhiothatprovidedoutpatientmentalhealthcounselingtochildrenandtheirfamilies.ShealsoconductedpsychologicaltestingatthatagencyandspenttwodayseachweekprovidingmentalhealthservicestochildrenandteensandpsychologicalconsultationservicestoteachersintheClevelandpublicschoolsystem.RossbeganworkingatIPFWin2008.RossaSouthSideHighSchoolgraduateandherhusbandarebothfromtheFortWayneareasotheyweregladtoreturnsincebothhavefamilyinthearea.Rosscreditsheropportunitytopursueresearchasanundergraduatespecificallyherworkintwopsychologylabshelpingprofessorscollectdataandevenconductingherownforanundergraduatehonorthesisasthemostinfluentialpartofherearlyacademicexperience.AtIPFWsheisabletooffersimilarexperiencestoCOASstudents.Irelyagreatdealonmyresearchassistantstohelpmecollectdata.ItypicallyhavefivetotenundergraduateresearchassistantsRAseachsemester.Theyareupper-levelpsychologymajorsandmany 21ofthemplantocontinuetheireducationaftertheirB.A.TheworkthesestudentsdodependsupontheprojectsrunningeachtermbuttheresearchfocusesonRosssworkwithintimatepartnerviolence.SomeRAsmightconductinterviewswithparticipantsabouttheirexperienceswithrelationshipviolencetranscribetheseinterviewsordobehavioralcoding.Theyhaveregularlabmeetingsduringwhichtheydiscussongoingstudiesandgeneralresearchonpartnerviolence.AhandfulofhighlymotivatedRAsmighthelpRossgeneratenewresearchhypothesesandorpresentresearchfindingsatprofessionalconferences.In2012IhadtwostudentswhotraveledwithmetoafamilyviolenceconferenceinNewHampshire.Eachpresentedaposterwithmeasaco-authorandbothofthesestudentsarenowingraduateprogramsinpsychology.Inspring2013fourofmyRAsco-authoredaposterwithmeaboutsexismandpartnerviolencethatwaspresentedinChicagoattheMidwesternPsychologicalAssociationsannualconference.Violenceincludingcouplesviolenceisunfortunatelycommon.IndatathatRosshascollectedfromIPFWstudentsaboutonethirdofthemmenandwomenreportbeinginacurrentrelationshipinwhichtherehasbeenatleastoneactofphysicalaggression.Andthemajorityofthemalsoreportsomehistoryofpsychologicalorverbalaggressioninthatongoingrelationship.OneofRosssspecificresearchinterestsisinviolencecommittedbywomeninromanticrelationshipssomethingthathasbeentabootostudyforquitesometime.Opinionsareshiftingasresearchincreasinglyshowsthatmostrelationshipviolenceisbidirectionalbutsomeviewthestudyofwomensviolenceasatypeofvictim-blaming.InoneofherfirstpublicationsRosswassurprisedtofindthatwomenself-reportedhigherratesofphysicalpartnerviolenceforthemselvesthanfortheirmalepartnersandthiswasinthecontextofcoupleswhowererecruitedduetothepresenceofmale-to-femaleviolence.TheresearchforherfirstpublicationaccordingtoRossiswheremyinterestinwomensviolenceinadditiontomensviolencebegan.Thereismuchresearchintowhymenhitwomenandwhatmustbewrongwiththesemenwiththegoalofdesigningtreatmentsforthesemen.Unfortunatelyweknowrelativelylittleaboutwomenwhoarephysicallyviolenttowardamalepartner.Rosssresearchhasalsoshownthatmostviolenceinrelationshipsisnon-severeandinfrequenttheresultofanargumentgettingoutofhandandnotreflectiveofsomeseriouspsychologicalproblemonthepartoftheaggressors.Stilllikemensomewomendogetintolegaltroublefordomesticviolence.Unfortunatelybecauseresearchershaveshiedawayfromstudyingwomensviolenceformanyyearswereallydonotknowhowbesttointervenetohelpthesewomenortoaddresstheirviolentbehavior.Ihopemyresearchhelpstochangethat.Sheconsidersherresearchintowomensviolencetobeamongthemostinterestingthingsthatshestudies.Inadditiontofindingthatratesofviolencearesimilarformenandwomensomeofthedatathatshehascollectedfrommenandwomeninthecommunitywhohavebeenreferredtobatterersinterventionbythelocalcourtsindicatethatmenandwomenmayhaveverysimilarmotivesfortheirrelationshipviolence.RosshasbeenatIPFWforfiveyearsandnotesthatinthattimethebridgeacrosstheriverwasbuiltandtherehavebeenbigchangestoWalbandGates.HoweverIthinkthebiggestchangehasbeenthestudentsorrathermyperspectiveonstudents.WhenIarrivedatIPFWIwasjustfinishingtherequiredinternshipformydoctorate.IwassorecentlyoutofschoolmyselfthatwheninteractingwithstudentsItriedtothinkofhowIwouldliketobetreatedasastudent.NowIhavetwosiblingsapproachingcollegeageandtwoveryyoung 22Fall2013childrenwhoIhopewillattendcollegesomeday.SowhenIinteractwithstudentsIfindmyselfthinkingabouthowIwouldlikeaprofessortotreatmysiblingsormyownchildren.ThosetwochildrenexplainwhyinspiteofinterestsoutsideofherteachingandresearchRosshasverylittletimeforactualhobbies.IamcurrentlyworkingtowardtenureandIhaveathree-year-oldandfive-month-old.WhenIdohavefreetimeIusuallytrytofindfunthingstodoasafamily.InherfutureresearchprojectRossplanstocontinuestudyingmensandwomensrelationshipviolencebuildingupontheresearchsheperformedasagraduatestudentinwhichshewaspartofateamexaminingphysiologicalreactivityamongpartner-violentmen.Wewouldconnectmentophysiologicalrecordingdevicestodetecttheirphysiologicalreactivitychangesintheirheartrateandsweatingforexampleduringdifferentlaboratorytaskswiththeirpartners.ThepsychologydepartmentatIPFWispreparingtopurchasesomepsychophysiologyequipmentthatRossplanstousetostartthesenewresearchstudieswithcouplesspecificallylookingatthephysiologicalreactivityofpartner-violentwomen.Sheisalsointerestedinpsychologicalrelationshipabuseviaelectronicmediasuchastextingandsocialmediaandinpartneraggressioninthecontextofsame-sexrelationships.BetweenoutingswithherfamilyandcompilinghertenuredossierthecomingyearswillseeRossaddingtocurrentresearchonintimatepartnerviolenceandmostlikelybreakingnewgroundwithresearchthatwillhelppractitionersbetterunderstandwomensviolence.TroyBassettHereswhatIoftentellstudentsAllresearchisquestions.Ifyouaskaquestionandfinditsalreadybeenansweredthenyoumoveontothenextone.Butsometimesthesimplestquestionsaretheonesnoonewantstotouch.AssociateProfessorTroyBassettEnglishandlinguisticsstartedwithwhathethoughtwasasimplequestionthatsomeonemusthavealreadyansweredHowmanythree-volumenovelswereproducedintheVictorianeraHecouldnotbelievenoonehadansweredthisbutnowheknowsbecausehecountedcompiledandsharedtheinformationwiththeworld.BassettbeganhisacademiccareeratCaliforniaInstituteofTechnologyCaltechanddidgraduateworkattheUniversityofKansas.OneofhisfirstteachingjobswasatHaskellIndianNationsUniversityinLawrenceKan.afederallyfundeduniversityforNativeAmericansestablishedinthe1880sthattransitionedfromboardingschooltotradeschooltouniversity.HeoriginallywenttoCaltechtostudyquantummechanics.Ibecamelessenamoredofphysicsaftertwoyearsandswitchedtomath.ButIwashavingsomuchfuninmyliteraturecoursesthatIeventuallydoublemajoredinmathandEnglish.InterestinglyunlikemostEnglishliteraturemajorsBassethasaBachelorofSciencenotArtsinEnglish.BassettappliedtobothmathandEnglishgraduateprogramsandchosetopursueEnglishattheUniversityofKansas.Mathisstillmyfallbackcareerifthisdoesntworkout.Hisdissertationresearchlookedatthechangesintheliterarymarketplaceinthe1880sand1890sasthemass-marketforfictionbegan.Thisaffectedeveryoneconnectedwithliteraryproductionauthorspublishersandreaders.Hislargeston-goingprojectisAttheCirculatingLibraryADatabaseofVictorianFiction18371901httpwww.victorianresearch.orgatcl.WhenIbeganIhadassumedsomeoneelsemusthavealreadydoneit.Butnoonedidanditneededtobedone.Itistimeconsumingandahugeorganizationalchallenge.InthisdatabaseBassettcompileshowmanyVictoriannovelswerepublishedorcataloguedwhattheywereaboutwhowrotethemandotherbasicdetails.InitiallyBassettwasjustcountingthree-volumenovelsforhisownresearchusewithnointentiontodoadatabase.IdidntwanttodoublecountsoanExcelspreadsheetseemedthebestoption.Butoncehehadover200entriesthespreadsheetbecameunwieldy.Ataconferencehementionedthathewascountingthree-volumenovelsandthepersonhewasspeakingtosaidYoushouldputthatontheWebpeoplemightfindthatinteresting.AnditseemedlikeagoodideabutitquicklybecameapparentthatastaticlistontheWebwouldnotbeveryusefulto 23scholarsandothersinterestedinit.AtthatpointitalsobecameclearthatadatabasewouldbethebestformatbutBassetthadnoexperiencebuildingdatabasesorusingsuchprograms.AtthetimeBassettwasunderemployedanddidnothaveaccesstofunding.Sohehadtoteachhimselfhowtobuildthisdatabase.Thatswherethecomputerprogrammingexperienceacquiredthroughhismathbackgroundhelped.Heboughtabooktolearnhowtocompiledatabasesdownloadedfreewareandworkedhiswaythroughthebooktobuildthewebsiteandmakeadatabaseforthefindings.WhenhewasreadytopublishtheworktotheWebthefirsthurdlewasfindingsomeonetohostthedatabase.AtaconferenceBassettmetPatrickLearyapioneerinWeb-basedVictorianstudies.LearycreatedtheVICTORIAlistservandwasafoundingmemberoftheSocietyfortheHistoryofAuthorshipReadingandPublishingSHARPaninternationalorganizationofhistoryofthebook.LearyaskedBassettabouthisworkandtookaninterestinthedatabaseandwhowashostingit.WhenheheardaboutthefrustrationshedencounteredtryingtofindahostLearygaveBassetttheusernameandpasswordfortheVICTORIAlistservsothatthedatabasecouldbehousedintheirservers.AttheCirculatingLibraryoffersanonlinebiographicalandbibliographicaldatabaseof19th-centuryfictionnotallbutanever-growingproportion.ThedatabaseishostedbytheVictorianResearchWebhttpvictorianresearch.orgatclamajorandfreeresearchresourceforVictorianscholars.AttheCirculatingLibraryismorethananenumerativebibliographyitenableslargerstatisticalanalysesforexampleannualtrendsofnovelproductionthenumberoftitlesproducedperauthororpublisherperyeartheratesofserializationandthespeedofreprinting.Answerstosuchquestionsbroadenthecontextfortheunderstandingofindividualauthorsandtextsandtheirrelationshiptothelargerculturalsphere.Bassettusedanearlyversionofthedatabasetoanalyzetheproductionofthree-volumenovelsinthelatterhalfofthe19thcenturywhichappearedinPapersoftheBibliographicalSocietyofAmericaandlaterheusedittostudytheeconomicsofthethree-volumenovelformatunderconsiderationatBookHistory.IguessIdidntexpecttheretobesomanynovelsIamclosinginon9000titleswithnoendinsight.Whatbeganasjustashort-termprojecthasmorphedintoitsowncreature.Themostsurprisingfindformehasbeenthenumberofauthorssofar2600Victorianswroteatleastonenovel.BassetthasalsoreceivedaprestigiousNationalEndowmentfortheHumanitiesNEHsummerstipendanawardfromtheBibliographicSocietyoftheUnitedKingdomandsummerresearchstipendsfromIPFWandPurdueResearchFoundationtoworkonthedatabase.Sofarhesreceivedmorethan25000topursuethisresearch.ItsverygratifyingtoreceivetheseawardsbutBassettquicklysharesItsgonebeyondanythingIcouldeverhaveimagined.InitiallyitwasgoingtobeIllputthisdatabaseupandthenIllbedone.PeoplecanuseitbutIllmoveoninmyresearch.Hefoundtwiceasmanythree-volumenovelsthanhethoughttherewouldbemorethan5200.Andthatwassupposedtobeit.Butaspeoplestartedusingthedatabasethequestionsstartedcominginwhyisntthistwo-orsingle-volumenovelinthereWhydontyoulistallofDickensworksSowiththeNEHgrantBassettfundedhistwo-volumenovelsearchwhichendedupbeingjustover2000books.Oncethosewereinthedatabasewiththethree-volumeandhandfuloffour-volumenovelshedfoundheagainthoughthewasdone.Sothedatabasewhilestillanactiveresearcharchivehasbecomeanon-goingsideprojectandhesaddingone-volumenovelsinamoreadhocschedule.Todateheestimateshesaddedabout1000ofthose.CompilingthedatabasehascreatedotherprojectslikeaninvestigationintowhethertheobscureVictoriannovelistHelenDickenswhoBassetstumbledacrosswhengatheringtitlesisrelatedtoCharlesDickens.ThedatabaseisopeninganewmapofVictorianfictionbecausewhatweseeasVictorianfictionisverynarrowbasicallyabout200authorsunder1000titlesthatgettaughtwrittenaboutandstudied.ThisisaverysmallamountincomparisontothevastamountofwritingVictorianwritersproduced.Sowhenyouseeallofthisdatayouseehowmuchisouttherethat.AndHelenDickensisanexamplethatjumpedoutatme.Anotherunintendedconsequenceofcompilingadatabaseistheabilitytofindpreviouslyunseenconnections.Thecomputercanorganizethedatainanywaypossibledateauthorpublishersettingbookspublishedin1868withthewordloveinthetitleandmore.YoucansortorganizeandplaywiththedatainwaysthatareallbutimpossiblewithaprintsourceexplainedBassett.AprojectBassetthopestoreceivefundingforistocreateamorerobustdatabasefortheinformationhehascompiled.Rightnowsomeofthemoreinterestingsearchfeaturesareonly 28Fall2013formerlytaughtthroughIPFWsCenterforAcademicSupportandAdvancementCASA.COASW111CriticalInquiryisdesignedtohelplearnerswhoarenotquitereadyforcollege-levelreadingexpectations.ItwillbecoordinatedbyHuffmanwhoseresearchinterestincludesrhetoricalcriticaloranalyticalreading.ThisnewclassgivesustheopportunitytocraftsomethingthatlooksatreadinganditsconnectiontowritinginatheoreticallysoundwaysaidHuffman.Oneideaistodevelopthiscoursesothatitpairswithawritingcoursetobecomeanewstandardtwo-coursesequenceforallincomingstudents.BecausetherearealotofskillsskillsthatwetendtoclassifyunderthismagicaltermcriticalthinkingatermeveryonebandiesaboutbutwhositsdownwithstudentstoshowthemhowtoanalyzesomethingHuffmandevelopedanewCOASW111curriculumthatwillbetaughtinfall2013.Thecourseintendstoaddresscurrentstudentsinabilitytoeffectivelyusethekindsoftextstheirprofessorsandtheirfutureemployersexpectthemtounderstand.Amidonexplainedhowstudentsarecomingtouswithlessexperiencereadingcomplextextspartiallybecausewearereadingfewerlongtextsusinginstrumentsthatmakecertaintypesofreadinglesslikelyanddoingmuchmorereadinginanon-linearfashion.COASW111willhelpthosewhoneedtostrengthentherhetoricalreadingskillstheywillneedincollegeandbeyond.HirschhavingtaughtCOASW111whileitwasstillcoordinatedinCASAplacesheavyemphasisonreadinginherclassesitisthefoundationoranintegralpartofallwritingassignments.TheevolutionofCOASW111excitedhergreatly.AnemphasisonrhetoricalreadingisalsooneofthemostsignificantchangestocompositioncurriculasinceIhavebeenheresaidHuffman.Ithasbeenchallengingforinstructorsandstudentsalikebecausetheyhavehadverylittleexposuretoitpreviouslybutithasproventobeanexcitingandeffectiveteachingmethodforbothgroups.HavingCOASW111asanoptionforstudentswillbenefitmanywhoneedhelpwithrhetoricalreadingandanalysis.AmidonexpandeduponHuffmansviewsrhetoricalreadingandanalysisformanystudentsisanewwayoflookingatatext.Generallystudentsareaskedtolookatatexttodecidewhatisthisaboutwhoarethemaincharactersorwhatsthetheme.Whilethatisaverysoundwayofanalyzingthecontentofatextitisalsoimportanttounderstandwhatthewriteristryingtodowithinatextbecauseinaworldinwhichmediaisfullofpropagandatheabilitytoseewhatawriteristryingtodowithatextisafundamentallyimportantskillset.WhenpeopleaskmewhatIlikemostaboutmyjobWebb-SunderhaussharedIalwaystellthemthatIgettoworkwithwritersfrombasicwriterstogradstudents.ThatissomethingthatIreallyappreciateaboutmypositionhereatIPFW.Ienjoyseeingstudentsatdifferentpointsintheirscholarlypath.ForexamplewithM.A.studentsparticularlyearlyintheirdegreestheytendtosufferfromwritinganxietyjustlikemanyofthebasicwritersinW129.Theyhavealotofthesamefearstheyhavetoworkthrough.ThedifferenceisthattheW129studentsarewriting45pagepaperswhilethegradstudentsarewriting2025pagepapers.Sothescaleoftheproblemisdifferentbuttherootoftheproblemisessentiallythesame.Theyarebothtransitioningintonewgenresofwritingthattheyhaventdonebefore.Ofteninstructiongoesbeyondwriting.Webb-SunderhausensuresthatallofherclassesmeetinacomputerlabonceaweekalthoughthisfallwillbedifferentbecausesheisteachinganiPadsectionofEnglishW129.Sheusescomputerlabsbecauseshewantstoensurethatstudentsunderstandthetechnology.TheresanassumptionandquitefranklyIthinkitisamistakenassumptionthatstudentsaretechsavvy.Notheyarenot.Theyareverygoodatconsumingmultimediamaterialtheyarenotgoodatproducingit.Inmanywritingclassesmultimediaassignmentsarereplacingtraditionalpapers.InW129studentscompleteaself-designedresearchprojectwhichcantakeanyformexceptatraditionalacademicresearchessay.InallclassesWebb-Sunderhausencouragesstudentstopursueamultimediaproject.TohelpmodelthisapproachsheoftenusesPreziamultimediapresentationappduringherlectures.AndwhilesomestudentsstillcreatePowerPointsothershavemadevideosonewroteatalkshowscriptandotherswriteletterstotheeditororblogs.Manydifferenttypesofpresentationsareusedtocompletethisresearchproject.Therearemanyquestionsabouthowthestateslegislativemandateswillchangecollege-levelinstruction.Howcanclassesofferedoverhighschoolsemestersreflectthepaceandrigorofa1516weekcollegecourseArehighschool 29studentsreadytotackletheissuesaddressedordothedepthandamountofworkrequiredWhatwillhappenwhentheystartcollegeassophomoresAndthepaymodelestablishedbythestatedoesnotcovertheexpensesincurred.YetevertheinnovatorthewritingprogrammighthaveamodelinwhichIPFWcontentisdeliveredtoschoolsremotelywhilethehighschoolstudentsworkwithateacherattheschool.HopefullythismodelwillbetestedinthefallwithaschoolinnorthernIndiana.HowdoesthisstateoffluxaffectfacultyandstudentsoncampusThatisstillplayingitselfout.LastfalltherewasasignificantdropinthenumberofW131sectionsprobablyformultiplereasonsnewadmissionstandardspushedremedialstudentsacrossthestreettoIvyTechtobegintheirdegreesmorestudentstookfreshmancompositioninhighschoolthelingeringeffectsoftheeconomicdownturnandmorestudentsstartingtheirdegreesatIvyTech.Thereisalsopressuretoreducethenumberofcreditsneededtoachieveanundergraduatedegree.State-levelmandateshavecappeddegreerequirementsat120credithours.Interestinglyinthispushtoreducedegreeprogramsto120creditsAmidonhasfoundthatwritingisnotbeingcut.ForexamplewhenIPFWsDepartmentofEngineeringwasreworkingitsprogrammingtomeetthenewstatecredithourlimitstherewasnointerestatallinchangingtheirwritingrequirements.EnglishW131istheonlyclassallIPFWstudentsmusttakebutmorethan80percentofallIPFWstudentsarerequiredtotakeatleastoneadditionaladvancedwritingcoursetocompletetheirdegreeprograms.Manystudentsinadvancedcoursesaretakingwritingclassesbeyondthosethattheirprogramsrequire.ItseemsthewordisgettingouttoIPFWstudentsabouthowimportanteffectivewrittencommunicationistoemployers.OnethingAmidonnotesabouttheareaistheneedtoincreasethenumberofgraduatesinnortheastIndiananotnecessarilyfortheirdegreesbutfortheentrepreneurialspiritthatgraduatesoftenbringtoaregion.Weneedtobedevelopingahightechloopforresearchandothertechcompanies.WhatdowritingprogramgraduatessayaboutwhatisoutthereRecentgraduateshavefoundavarietyofjobs.TwohavebeenhiredbylocaltechstartupsApteraSoftwareandExtensionInc.Initiallybothwerehiredtodotechnicalwritingsuchasthedocumentationofsoftwarebutbotharenowdoingmoreprojectmanagement.OtherrecentgraduatesareusingtheirwrittencommunicationskillsinjobsatVeraBradleyandalocalcompanythatworksonradiofrequencytechnologies.Therearemanyopportunitiesintechnologyandotherfieldsforlocalwritinggraduates.HirschwillgraduateinDecember2013afterhavingbeenastudentatIPFWforalmostadecade.Shecamebacktoschoolparttimeandthenfulltimetocompleteabachelorsdegreeandthenmoveddirectlyintothegraduateprogram.SheknewearlyonthatIPFWwaswhereshewantedtostaysothathasbeenwhatsheworkedtoward.Nowshewantstoworkwithstudentswhoaretransitioningfromhighschooltocollege.Theworkofthewritingprogramisnotjustaboutwordsonapageanymoreanditsgraduatesaremovingintoexcitingnewprofessionalarenas.Asusualthebreadthofwhatstudentsneedisever-changingandexpanding.AsWebb-SunderhausputitIthinkthatoneofourchallengesisthatthereneedstobemorewritingacrossthecurriculum.Therealityisthatifwhatistaughtintheseclassesisnotreinforcedthroughoutstudentscurriculumitwillbeforgotten.Butthatisacampuschallengenotawritingprogramchallenge.Itwillbeinterestingtowatchtheprogramsnextevolution.t 31withpeoplewhetheritsastay-at-homemomwhoisraisingmoneybyaskingherfriendsandfamilytosupportherwalkoraCEOwhowantstoknowthebenefitstotheirorganizationofprovidingsponsorshipdollars.Ihavetobeabletotailormyaskandmyconversationtotherightaudience.WhiletheircourseworkwasvitaltotheirsuccessLinkandHayescreditinternshipsforprovidingmanyskillsthathavehelpedthemsucceedprofessionally.BothdidinternshipsinFortWaynesnot-for-profitcommunityandthishelpedthemfindjobsaftergraduatingbecausetheyestablishedaprofessionalnetwork.HayessaidthatherinternshipsreallyhelpedbuildmywritingandeditingskillsandIlearnedthatIreallyneedtobesocialwhenworkingwithpeople.IlearnedwhatIlikedandwhatIdidntlike.Linksaidherinternshipswerekeytonetworkingandbuildingrelationshipsandthatisreallyimportanttome.Bothwomenencouragestudentstodointernshipsespeciallyiftheywanttostayinthearea.InacommunitylikeFortWayneyournetworkofpeoplecanmakeyouorbreakyousaidHayes.Linkaddedthatstudentsandgraduatesshouldmakethoseconnectionsandtalktopeople.DontbeafraidtoaskforadviceorhelpIhavefoundthatpeoplegenuinelywanttohelpotherpeoplesucceed.Bothgraduatesdemonstratehowprofessionalsuccessislinkedtobuildingrelationshipswithfacultynetworkinginthecommunityandapplyingcommunicationskillseffectively.InlargeparttheycredittheirtimeinCOASsDepartmentofCommunicationforprovidingthemwiththeskillstoaffectpositivechangeinnortheastIndianaandtheyencourageeveryonetheymeettomakeadifferenceintheirowncommunityanywaythattheycan.AsaseniorfinishinganundergraduatedegreeinenvironmentalbiologyatPhiladephiasDrexelUniversityTomBackofM.S.13biologyspentasummerinGreece.OftheexperiencehesaidItdidntreallymatterwhatIwasdoingIwasgoingtoGreeceThiswasmyfirstfieldexperienceworkingwithseaturtlesnestingbeachesintheMediterraneantrackingtheirnestingpatterns.ThisexperienceishowhefellintowhatwouldbecomehisgraduateresearchtopicatIPFW.AsanundergraduateBackofdidnothavearesearchfocusbutheimpressedhisDrexelprofessorssomuchthatafterthesummerinGreecehewasinvitedtospendanothersixmonthsinthefieldinCostaRica.ThisiswherehemetandcollaboratedwithProfessorofBiologyFrankPaladino.BackofcallshisworkinCostaRicaessentiallyasixmonthjobinterview.PaladinolikedmyworksoIstarteddevelopingideasforamastersthesisandheappliedtoCOASsmastersprograminbiology.BackofsgraduateresearchwasrootedinhisinitialseaturtlefieldexperiencebutheshiftedfocustoadifferentbeachinGreecewherenestingnumberswereincreasing.IfcurrenttrendscontinuethebeachIdidmymastersresearchatwillbecomethenumberonenestingbeachintheMediterranean.SoIwentoutanddidallthepreliminaryworksothatifalocalgovernmentororganizationcreatesamarineparktheycanusemyresearchtofindoutwheretheturtlesareandprotectthoseimportantareas.ThoughhedoesntdodirectadvocacyworkforseaturtlesinlocalGreekcommunitieshisresearchprovidesinformationthatcanprotectthisTomBackofM.S.13biology 32Fall2013endangeredspecies.Soheknowsthathehelpedsavesomeanimalslivesandhopefullymadeanimpactontheworld.AnditreallydoesnthurttoliveonabeachinGreeceinthesummerhesaidwithasmile.OnhiswaytoearningadegreeBackofhadonemajorsetbackacancerdiagnosis.In2010whileteachingaclasshealmostpassedoutnotfromnervesbutfromexhaustion.Hewenttothehospitalandthedoctorswantedtooperateimmediately.PreferringtobewithhisfamilyandfriendstomeetthischallengeBackofreturnedtoMarylandwheredoctorsatJohnsHopkinsUniversityHospitalremovedafour-and-a-half-poundmalignanttumorthathadcollapsedhislung.AfteritwasremovedBackofstartedchemotherapy.AfterchemotherapyandothertreatmentsBackofneededawaytogetbackinshapeandremainmotivated.HeheardaboutanopportunitytobikeacrosstheUnitedStatesinsupportoftheUlmanCancerFundforYoungAdultsandthoughheonlyhadafewmonthstogetbackintoshapehestartedbikingeverydaytohelphislungsanddiaphragmadjust.InBackofswordsitwasmyreturntotherealworld.OnchemoIfeltlikeIwasondefense.IwasjustdoingwhateverthedoctorsandnursestoldmetodoandIdidntreallyhavechoices.ButwhenIdidthisbikeridetoraisemoneytofightcancerIcouldgetonoffenseandIwasabletoinspirehopeandraisefundsforalotofpeopleoutthere.ThebikeridefromBaltimoretoSanFranciscotook70daysgoinganaverageof85milesadaywithsomestopsatcancercentersandhospitals.EventhoughBackofhadsurgeryamonthpriortoleavinghecompletedtheentire4200-miledistancethankstosheerwillpowerandknowingwhentotakebreaks.ForhiseffortsattheUlmanCancerFundforYoungAdultsBlueJeanBallinJanuary2013hereceivedtheYoungAdultFightAwardwhichisgiventoindividualswhoregardlessofprognosisoroutcomehaveconfrontedthediseasewithpurposegraceandfighthttpwww.ulmanfund.org.BackofsaidWhenwewouldstopatcancercentersandmeetpeoplewhoweregoingthroughchemowewouldtellthemWhileyouregoingthroughchemotheleastIcandoisbikeupthismountain.Youhelpmotivatemetobikebecauseyoudonthaveachoice.FormechemowasmoredifficultthanbikingthatlongadistancebecauseyoualwayshavetheoptionwhenbikingtosayNoImgettinginthevanorIneedabreak.Withchemotherapyyoudonthavethat.Backofiscancer-freenowbuthewillcontinuetoreturnforscans.HesaidoftheexperienceItskindofbizarrebutIfeellikeImbetteronthissideofcancer.Yesitwasterriblebutpartlybecauseofthebikingexperienceandsomeofthepeopleyoumeetalongthewayitchangesyourperspective.Imhappythatithappened.Iknowthatsastrangestatementbutitstrue.BackofreceivedaMasterofScienceinbiologyinJuly2013andhescurrentlyonthejobmarkethopingtofindworkdoingmoreresearchinthefield.WiththiscollectionofincredibleexperiencesbehindhimBackofhasaninterestingperspectivefromwhichtochoosewhathewantstodowithamastersdegree.KimSlackB.S.01physicsreceivedabachelorsinEnglishfromBostonUniversitybutwasntfindingtheworkIwasqualifiedforveryfulfilling.Ajobinapediatricsurgeonsofficeshowedherthatshe 33enjoyedworkinginthemedicalfieldandwithchildren.Soshere-enrolledincollegecoursestopursueamedicaldegree.Forthatdegreeshetookaphysicscoursethatsheenjoyed.MarkMastersCOASphysicsprofessortoldSlackthatphysicsmajorshaveahigheracceptanceratetomedicalschoolbutIthinkhehadanotheragenda.HeisveryconvincingsoIdecidedtogiveitago.ItwasamodernphysicscoursewithProfessorDavidMaloneythatconvincedSlacktoswitchhermajortophysics.WhileatIPFWSlackcompletedfouryearsofresearchinMasterslaserlaboratorystudyingconceptslikemolecularspectroscopyandmappingoutenergyboundariesofNa-Kasodium-potassiumalloymolecules.ThemostinterestingpartofthatexperiencewasbuildingthetestequipmentanddesigningthetestsSlackshared.IassistedhimwithbuildingatunableopticaldyelaseranIRmonochromatorFabry-Protinterferometersandothergreatmeasurementapparatus.ShealsohelpedrevamptheSocietyofPhysicsStudentsandtheyconductedcommunityoutreachprogramsandinvestigateddifferentprofessionsinvolvedwithphysics.SlackwaschosenforaNationalScienceFoundationResearchforUndergraduatespositionattheIndianaUniversityCyclotronthesummerbeforeherjunioryearandwonthePhysicsStudentoftheYearawardtheOrganicChemistryStudentoftheYearawardandtheWiseScholarshipherjunioryear.AsaseniorshewasagainawardedthePhysicsStudentoftheYearawardandtheWiseScholarship.ShealsoworkedatITTExelisinFortWayneasaco-opstudent.ForsomeonewhomajoredinEnglishandonlytookonemathclassinhighschoolIamprettyproudandamazedatthesegiftsIreceived.AlthoughsheconsideredtransferringtoPurdueatonepointonceIhadbeenatIPFWayearIknewIwouldstaySlackexplained.Shecreditedthebreadthofopportunitiesavailabletoanundergraduateinthesciencesespeciallythatunlikeinmanyprogramsshewasabletodoresearchasanundergraduate.Ihadaccesstomyprofessorsconstantly.Thequalityofprofessorsisoutstandingandthemathandphysicsdepartmentsareworldclass.IamveryfortunatetohavegraduatedfromIPFW.MaloneyandMastersbothmadelastingimpressionsonherbutallthefacultywasconcernedwithteachingthebeautifulintricaciesofnatureanditslaws.Theytrulywanttheirstudentstounderstandthemechanismsofthebeautyaroundusandnotjustpushstudentsthroughtomatriculation.TheyareinvolvedwiththestudentslikenoothereducationalexperienceIhaveeverhad.MastersMaloneyandAssociateProfessorsTimothyGroveJohnRobinsondeceased2011andVinceMaloneychemistryplayedahugepartinmysuccess.ShedoessingleoutMasterswhowillalwaysbeaverystronginfluenceinmylife.HesawthepotentialinmetobeagoodscientistwhichIhadneverseen.HehelpedmeunderstandthatmathwasjustatoolnotaninherentpersonalitytraitandthatifItriedItoocoulddodifferentialequationsaddingthathisencouragementwasthefuelthatignitedmypassionforphysicsandmydesiretoexploreandunderstandtheuniverse.TheconnectionsshemadeinCOASandfromherco-opexperienceatITTExcelispaidoffforSlack.ShewasofferedajobatITTExceliswhenshereceivedherphysicsdegreebutthejobofferwasntenoughtokeepherfromgoingtotheUniversityofArizonatostudyopticalscience.UndeterredayearlaterITTExceliscontactedheraboutanotherjobworkingwithAdvancedBaselineImagersageostationaryimagerorcamerawhosedataproducesmanyoftheweatherproductsweuseonadailybasis.Shehaddirectexperiencewithoneoftheimagerscomponentsandshejumpedontherareopportunitytobepartofamajorprojectfromitsbeginning.HavingworkedasaseniorsystemsengineeratITTExcelisfor11yearsSlackstillenjoysherjob.ThoughmostofherjobresponsibilitiesanddutiesarespecializedsheconstantlydrawsontheconceptsandskillsshegainedatIPFW.ThephysicsdepartmentwasthegenesisofeverythingIdoatITTExcelis.Slackcontinuestouseherexperiencestogivebacktootherstudentsaswell.Ienjoyworkingwithstudentsandhelpingthemrealizetheirgoals.Ienjoysharingmyexperiencewiththemandlettingthemknowthatnodreamisimpossible.Ialsoworkwithalotofyoungwomenwhohavefacedchallengesintheirlivesandare 34Fall2013startingover.Iwantthemtoknowthattheyhaveworthandcanaccomplishtheirgoalswithalittlehardworkandpersistence.Iftheywantittheycanhaveit.ShehopestohavethesameeffectonothersthatthephysicsdepartmenthadonhersayingthattheytaughtheraboveallelsethatIcanaccomplishanythingIputmymindto.Ittaughtmetofaceirrationalfearsandconquerthemwithhardworkandpersistence.Andmostofallittaughtmeaboutneutrinooscillations.Aftergraduatingin2010withaBachelorofScienceinsecondaryeducationwithaSpanisheducationconcentrationlinguisticsminorandinternationalstudiescertificateShontaelWanjemausedherminorinlinguisticstopursueaPh.D.atOhioStateUniversityOSU.Fromthisprestigiousprogramshereceivedafullyfundedfellowshipthatincludesastipendresearchfundingandevenhealthinsurance.HerresearchmixesmultiplemethodologiesandallowsWanjematoclassifyherselfasalinguisticanthropologistsocio-linguistorsocio-phonetician.HerworkinlinguisticsstudiesSpanishlanguageuseintheUnitedStatesspecificallyfocusingonafewregionaldialectsofMexicanSpanish.Wanjemastudiescodeswitchingandspeechperceptionfrombothalinguisticandsocialperspective.Sheplanstoproduceinformationthatsheandotherscholarscanusetoadvocateforminoritygroups.OneofherPh.D.researchprojectswasdoneataculturallydiversefleamarketonthewestsideofColumbusOhio.ThemarketsvendorsidentifyasEastAsianNorthAfricanblackandwhiteAmericanandLatinoinWanjemaswordsahodgepodgeoflanguagesandculturesbothshoppersandvendors.Bysimplyattendingthemarketregularlyshebegantonoticeinterestingthingsaboutthelanguagesactuallybeingspoken.Peoplewerespeakinglanguagesyouwouldntexpectthemtospeakwithpeopleyouwouldntexpectthemtousethemwithshesaid.Soshebegananethnographicstudyofthemarketandthelanguagesitsvendorschosetouse.AccordingtoWanjemathiswasamixofanethnographyandquantitativelinguisticslookingatthefirstthreeinteractionsconversationsthatvendorshadwithshoppersfocusingonthevendorsandIwantedtoseehowtheyweredecidingwhogotwhatlanguage.SoIdmakepredictionsIcouldberightorwrongaboutwhatlanguagetheyspeakandchoosetospeakwitheachother.TherewereblackLatinoswhowerePuertoRicansandDominicanswhiteLatinosblackAfricansandblackAmericans.ConsideringallthediversityinlanguageandculturesheencounteredWanjemawonderedhowarewedecidingwhogetsacertainlanguagebeforeIhearanybodyspeakShedidayearsworthoffieldworkatthemarketandevengotinvolvedinthefleamarketmakingandsellingpiatas.ShepresentedherworkatStanfordUniversityandiscurrentlypreparingitforpublicationinanacademicjournal.ThoughsheiswellrootedintheworldoffieldresearchnowtheroadtopursuingaPh.D.wasnotnecessarilyabriefone.Wanjemagraduatedfromhighschoolin1996andstartedherundergraduatedegreeatIPFWthatsameyear.ThenshetooksometimeofftostartafamilyreturningtoIPFWafewyearslater.Thoughhermajordidntchangeherfocushadshifted.WanjemaalwayshadapersonalinterestinculturalandethnicdiversityandasanundergraduatesheworkedandvolunteeredwiththeFortWayneimmigrantcommunitywithSpanishBurmeseandNorthAfricangroupsandatIPFWsOfficeofDiversityandMulticulturalAffairs.Herprofessorssawherinterestindiversityandresearchinadditiontobeingastrongstudentacademicallyanditwasclearshewasanundergraduatewhowouldbewillingandabletohoneherskillsinbothareas.IfeelsofortunatetohavepeopleseesomethinginmetellmewhatitistheysawandgivemeaplacetochannelthatenergyWanjemasaysaddingthatatShontaelWanjemaBS10Spanisheducation
